In February 2019 Scottish legislation changed with regards to requirements for smoke detection in domestic dwellings. This legislative change has come into force as a result of the many tragedies and loss of life caused by fire in the home. Due to a lack of publicity and cost to home owners during a time of recession the Scottish Government extended the effective date of legislation to February 2022. Each alarm must be interlinked and any standalone alarms which cannot be interlinked no longer meet the legislative requirements and must be replaced, therefore choosing the right alarm is essential to allow compliance with the law.

The standard requires:

• One smoke alarm installed in the room most frequently used for general daytime living purposes

• One smoke alarm in every circulation space on each storey, such as hallways and landings

• One heat alarm installed in every kitchen

All alarms should be ceiling mounted and interlinked. Where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance (such as boilers, fires (including open fires) and heaters) or a flue, a carbon monoxide detector is also required which does not need to be linked to the fire alarms.
